Moved by the Spirit: A Jazz Liturgy Setting

I am closing in on the final stages of production of my new jazz setting of the liturgy. It will include a Kyrie, Gloria, Psalm Setting, Gospel Acclamation, Great Thanksgiving, Sanctus, and Lamb of God. All set to grooves that range from Modern Jazz to Swing and Afro-Cuban to Boogaloo. Sometimes the music is contemplative and other times it's a dance party. Moved by the Spirit: A Jazz Liturgy Setting will be ready to publish (and purchase on my website) in 2024!

I've been collaborating with Luke Thering on the copy work and piano parts. This music is intended to be played with a rhythm section, but Luke is helping me develop these arrangements to the point where they could function with piano accompaniment alone. His taste and skill is top notch! And I'm excited for the way this increases the accessibility of the music.

Besides being a teacher and performer (husband, father, son, brother, etc), I'm an active worship leader and composer/arranger of hymns and liturgy in various jazz styles. My goal in this settings is always to create music that facilitates congregational singing, feels like home to jazz musicians, is accessible to music leaders (don't need to be a jazz pro), and creates a natural connection point for racial justice ministries.

If you are a worship leader, jazz musician doing worship music or a church musician looking for something new - stay tuned for more updates! Sign up here to get a message when the liturgy is published.
